On September 11, 2023, the Asbury Park Music Foundation (APMF) received a $21,750 grant from the Winners Circle Society to expand its renowned "Music Saved My Life" program to Red Bank. This marked the fourth year of giving for the Winners Circle Society.
Natural Expansion into Red Bank
With a decade of success in Asbury Park, APMF naturally expanded into Red Bank, forging partnerships with the Red Bank Charter School and the Boys & Girls Club. Over the past 10 years, APMF and the Lakehouse Music Academy have established a successful model for Music Saved My Life. APMF places Lakehouse teachers in local schools, where they conduct music classes during the school day, and at Boys & Girls Clubs for after-school music enrichment. APMF has also constructed a hip hop studio at the Asbury Park Boys & Girls Club and is expanding its involvement at the Red Bank Club. APMF covers the cost of teachers to provide music education in these schools and community locations.
Progressive Music Education and Student Development
Students follow a progressive music curriculum and progress at their own pace, developing into well-rounded musicians with proper technique, instrument knowledge, and practical performance skills. Student progress is measured in accordance with this curriculum.
Creating a Safe Space and Amplifying Young Voices
APMF provides students with a safe space to be themselves, bravely and unapologetically, amplifying their voices. Moreover, teachers develop an emotional connection with the students, extending far beyond music, and become trusted mentors. If a student expresses a need for help with math, food for their family, or is experiencing online bullying, our teachers spring into action.
